Sharing Stories of Reading Challenges Will Promote Dyslexia Awareness

WATERBURY, Conn.—March 27, 2025 —The State Education Resource Center (SERC) is seeking student participants to share their personal history with dyslexia and other reading challenges through a new partnership program with the Connecticut State Department of Education's Office of Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities.

The video project, "Dyslexia Unscripted: Stories, Strengths and Self-Advocacy," is aimed at teenagers, educators and families and will raise awareness and celebrate the unique strengths and experiences of those managing dyslexia.

Connecticut students may participate by sharing their stories on camera, contributing behind the scenes, creating advocacy content or reviewing and editing scripts.

Those choosing to share their stories will help to create three-to-five-minute clips focusing on the relationship between emotions and learning, personal stories and experiences and/or tools for self-advocacy. Participants may also help with storytelling, graphic design, content creation and more. All participants will receive a formal letter of appreciation from the Connecticut State Department of Education and the Office of Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities, and the project may be used to support a capstone project or contribute toward volunteer requirements for graduation or other volunteer projects.

Participants should expect to attend an initial information session and up to two 30-minute virtual meetings, as well as time creating content. All meetings will be scheduled based on student availability to avoid conflict with school hours and other commitments.

Completed videos will be shared on websites of both the Office of Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities and SERC.

Interested students should visit https://serc.info/dyslexiaunscripted to complete a registration form. The State Education Resource Center (SERC) is a Waterbury, Connecticut based quasi-public agency providing resources, professional development, and a centralized library to educators, families, and community members in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Education and other partners.

SERC believes that all students have the right to access opportunities and experiences that reflect and respect their differences and abilities. In Connecticut, educational outcomes for students of color, students who are English Language Learners, and students with disabilities continue to lag behind outcomes for other students. To help eliminate these opportunity gaps, SERC addresses institutionalized racism and other issues of social justice in schools and districts and both models and facilitates equity in education.
