How do I find out if the Library owns a book/test/DVD or something else I need?

Is there someone I can ask for help with research?

Yes! The Library offers a number of ways to get help with research. Please see the options described on the Ask-A-Librarian page.

How can I search the online journal databases the Library has?

The online journal databases can only be searched while you are in the Library. The SERC Library at this time does not provide online access outside of the Library.

The SERC Library has online database subscriptions for:

  • Wilson’s Education Index – indexes and abstracts for over 750 journals and other publications (450 are peer-reviewed and 300 are available in full text).
  • EBSCOHost Professional Development Collection – indexes and abstracts 702 journals and other publications (547 are peer-reviewed and 523 are available full text).
  • EBSCOHost Psychological and Behavior Science Collection – indexes and abstracts 574 journals and other publications (547 are peer-reviewed and 523 are available full text).
  • ERIC – indexes and abstracts 2,200 digests and 1,000 educational and education-related journals.
  • Science Direct Journals – online full text subscription to six specific journals. (See Journals and Database Lists for title information).
  • Sage Online Publications – online full text subscription to currently 14 journals (we are adding new Sage titles monthly) and online abstracts to all titles within Sage Online Publications database. (See Journals and Database Lists for title information).
Is there a way to see if the Library has a journal I need?

Does the Library own Mental Measurements Yearbook for test reviews?

Yes. The Library owns a print subscription to Mental Measurements Yearbook (Buros) and it is available in the Reference section of the Library.

Where is the Library located?

The Library is located at 25 Industrial Park Road, Middletown, Connecticut. We are located off the back lobby entrance (smoked glass entrance) at the back of the building. Enter the lobby and the Library entrance is the first door on the right.

Can I use the Library if I am not a SERC Library member?

Yes! The Library is open to the general public, you only need to become a member if you would like to borrow resources from the Library. Membership to the Library is contingent upon a person’s home address, home telephone number, work number, cell phone number, and email address. We also use a driver’s license as an alternate ID. The Library does not share its membership database with any other organization.

Can I use my wireless laptop in the Library?

Yes! The Library now provides free wi-fi internet access for patrons.

Can I print/make copies?

Yes! You may print from the computers at 10 cents a page and you may make copies from printed materials at the copy machines for 10 cents a page. Neither copiers nor printers are coin operated and you may pay at the Circulation Desk by cash or check made payable to Rensselaer at Hartford (SERC Library’s fiscal agent).

Is there a drop box?

Due to the cost and the size of some our resources, we do not have a drop box. Resources need to be returned during our open hours. Click here for a list of hours.

How many resources (books, tests, kits) can I take out?

You may borrow 3 resources at one time from each of the 10 collections within the Library. The ten collections are: Books, Family Books, Young People’s Books, Tests, Instructional Materials, Inservice Education, School-Family-Community Partnership resources, CD-ROM software programs, Vertical File resources (pamphlets and booklets), and Web Resources. If you already have 3 resources in a given collection and want another, you will need to return 1 resource for each new resource from that collection.

How long is the loan period?

The loan period for resources borrowed from the Library is three (3) weeks (21 days).

Can I renew the resources (books, tests, kits)?

The Library allows a one week (7 days) renewal as long as the resources are not on reserve for another patron.  Resources may be renewed online using the library catalog (click here for our online catalog) or by calling the library.

Can I reserve resources (books, tests, kits, etc.)?

Yes! You may reserve resources that are currently out of the Library. Staff will call you when the reserve comes in and you will have three (3) days to pick up the reserve.

The Library does not take advance reserve requests, however, we do suggest that if you need a resource for a particular time period, you search the Athena card catalog approximately four (4) weeks prior to the date you need the resource to see the whether the resource is in or out. Then call the Library and ask to have the resource placed on reserve for you.

You can also reserve resources online by logging in to our online catalog using your Library membership number and password. Click here for our online catalog.

Can I borrow bound or single issues of journals and magazines that the Library owns?

No, however you may use the copiers located in the Library to copy articles from bound or single issue journals and magazines. Articles available in online databases can be printed directly from the computer.

The cost is $0.10 per page. You do not need coins for the copiers. At the end of your visit to the Library, please tell the Librarian at the Circulation Desk how many copies and/or print-outs you have made. We accept cash or checks (made out to Rensselaer at Hartford).
