The CMT/CAPT Skills Checklist is Connecticut's alternate assessment that is used to determine the extent to which students with significant cognitive disabilities have participated in and benefited from grade level general education curriculum. This assessment reflects the combined vision of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) by promoting high expectations, uniform standards, and public accountability. It is linked to the Connecticut Framework: K-12 Curricular Goals and Standards, and supports instructional decisions to improve students' access, language arts, mathematics, and science skills.

The CMT/CAPT Modified Assessment System (MAS) is Connecticut's other alternative assessment for students with disabilities. Information provided during this training will assist teachers in selecting the appropriate alternative assessment for students with disabilities. In order to improve academic and social outcomes for students with significant cognitive disabilities, and meet federal and Connecticut assessment requirements for students in grades 3 through 8 and 10, participants in this professional development activity will understand the identification process for Connecticut's CMT/CAPT Skills Checklist and the CMT/CAPT MAS; the alignment between Connecticut's general education performance standards and the Skills Checklist essence statements and downward extensions; the Skills Checklist procedures, the rating scale, acceptable prompts, cues, and response options, and Web-based resources; the online registration and submission process for the CMT/CAPT Skills Checklist or the CMT/CAPT MAS; and how to use assessment data from the Skills Checklist to plan instruction and monitor student progress.
