Happy Earth Day from SERC

Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day!  One year ago, SERC started its Going Green Campaign.  Our staff was encouraged to be more mindful of the environment and to learn how to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  Tips were sent via email every week with ideas of how to take small steps to leave the world a better place for future generations.   Recycling bins were set up in SERC offices as well as in the SERC classrooms for plastic, glass, cans, and redeemables.  SERC also participated in the Middletown Sneaker Recycling Program, which turns old sneakers into playground material, and recycled our old cell phones for cash, which we donated to a local boy with medical needs.

This year, SERC would like to reach out to our clients and increase your awareness about global warming and conservation.  The “SERC Goes Green” section of the Web site will be updated every several weeks and will include environmental facts and suggestions of ways that you can go green at your home or school.  If you have tips and ideas of your own, or would like to respond to the ones already posted, please do so in the “Comments” section.

Since it is Earth Day, the first Going Green Tip is to plant a tree.  Trees are beautiful, they provide shade, consume CO(that’s good), and they produce oxygen. Planting a tree can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clean pollution, secure soil in place to prevent erosion, and provide homes for a lot of biodiversity.

If you, your class, or your family can’t plant a tree (or even if you already did!), log on to www.jogogreen.com.  For every 10 questions about the environment that you answer correctly, the Web site will plant one tree in a deforested area of Africa.

Take part in the global Earth Day Network. Read more about the history of Earth Day on wikipedia.com.   And visit this web site regularly to find out how to make every day Earth Day.
